Comments : If you after after a good large dark amethyst from Uruguay, this is the one for you. This is a nice large stone. It has several small veil inclusions in one corner which are very hard to spot and would mostly likely be hidden by the setting. It is predominately deep blues and purples and violet pink flashes. Overall a very impressive gem.

The outdoor pics where taken in shaded/dappled sunlight... the amethyst positively glows!

Comments : This is a gorgeous, rich and sultry pair of amethysts from Uruguay. These gems are representative of the finest colour that Uruguayan amethyst is famous for. They are cut in my bright and flashy Sunflare design and will fit any standard setting. These gems are dark and have those rich velvety violet/purple/indigo flashes of colour. They would be mindblowing set in gold and would make a totally fabulous pair of earrings. One of the stones is a touch darker then the other and both are eye clean. An exceptionally fine pair of round Uruguayan amethysts!

Amethyst, Under The Dome - Part 1, #80

Stone : Amethyst
Cut By : Doug Menadue, 2008
Item : #80
Design : Under The Dome - Part 1 (Doug Menadue)
Origin : Uruguay
Treatments : None
Weight : 16.7 carats
Clarity : Very Slightly Included
Size : 12.5mm X 17mm X 13mm
Price : SOLD

Comments : This is a totally awesome amethyst! Its huge and it means business. There is alot of action going on in this gemstone with deep velvety purples and flashes of indigo and red. The design is one I created specifically for this particular piece of amethyst and I envisage it being set in a big and bold chunky men's gold ring. It is a deep cut in an oval shape with a high-top dome. It would be VERY impressive indeed and nothing less would do! You should see it at nighttime... it is breath-taking and simply stunning. You could look at it for hours. The deep cut also adds something special and creates a very interesting "depth-perception" sort of effect... don't really know how to put it into words... you simply have to see it to believe it. This stone is totally unique... it is certainly not something you see everyday. The photos do not in anyway do justice to the gem and the colours. There is a very slight veil which is not noticeable face up... other then that, perfect!

Amethyst, Utopia Pear, #41

Stone : Amethyst
More Info Cut By : Doug Menadue, 2008
Item : #41
Design : Utopia Pear (Jeff Graham)
Origin : Uruguay
Treatments : None
Weight : 5.43 carats
Clarity : Very Slightly Included
Size : 14mm X 9.5mm X 8.5mm
Price : SOLD

Comments : This is a lovely gemstone in a very elegant design which you will rarely come across. It has a classic shape and will make a wonderful ring. The colour tone is good and not overly saturated. There are the vivid flashes of rich purple, indigo, pinkish-purple and more which are characteristic of amethyst from Uruguay. This is a first class stone and finely cut. There is the tiniest of feather veils on one of the edges just on the inside of the girdle and is difficult to see. It is not noticeable when the stone is viewed face up and would be hidden once the stone is set.

Comments : Amethyst is instantly recognisable for its lovely violet and purple colors and has long been used in jewelry. It is perhaps the most valuable stone in the quartz family. The name is believed to come from the Greek meaning "not drunken" and was indeed used as an amulet against drunkeness. In past times and even today, amethyst is a favorite gemstone within the christian church, being worn by priests and officals in rings. Historically, amethyst was much rarer then it is today and was highly regarded and valued and considered to be a very precious gem along side emeralds, rubies and sapphires. Today, large deposits are known and this has made it very attainable.

Amethyst is found in many places but some of the best comes from Brazil, Uruguay and Zambia. The amethyst from each location can be quite distinct and recognisable, for example, top Uruguayan amethyst is very highly saturated and has strong blue-purple colors. Some stunning stone called "Siberian" amethyst came from Russia but the deposits have long since been mined out. This particular siberian amethyst had red tones and the name is now (probably too often and incorrectly) used for amethyst that has similar red-purple tones. The term is applied perhaps a little too liberally these days in the market place.

Amethyst is usually found as crystals, either loose or in geodes. These geodes are like hollow rocks with the inside being coated in amethyst crystals. Some of these geodes can attain sizes as big as watermelons and even as big as a person! They are cut in halves and the crystals removed if they are found to be of good facet grade. These geodes are often used as displays and are absolutely beautiful glittering in the candlelight. High quality amethyst facet rough is becoming expensive as costs of mining goes up.

Amethyst can also be heat treated at around 878-1382 degrees F to improve colour or change the colour completely to yellow (citrine), red-brown and even green. The coloring agent in amethyst is iron.
