Asscher Cut

Design : Asscher Cut (Classic) Facets : 73 or 65

This Asscher is the one that creates what people refer to as the "windmill" effect.

Depending on the type of stone being cut I will either cut the Asscher with four or five tiers of facets on the pavilion. I find that lower RI stones like quartz and beryl require five tiers (as pictured in the diagram) in order to produce a satisfactory pattern. Topaz, tourmaline, peridot, garnet, sapphires and other higher RI material is cut with four tiers. This four tier version is consistent with the original Asscher design which some literature describes as having 58 facets.

This number is comprised of 56 facets + 1 table facet + 1 culet facet and does not count the 8 girdle facets. The culet facet is like a small table but placed at the bottom of the stone. This is generally only done on diamonds over a certain size. On coloured gemstones this culet facet is not normally cut, rather the culet is cut to a point.

Comments : It's big and it's beautiful! This is a luscious pink tourmaline, eye clean and cut in the classic Asscher cut. In person it has rich cranberry pink tones with secondary peach tones (the photos just don't do this gem any justice). This is a top shelf gem and you don't often come across flawless gems of this size, colour and quality.

Comments : I'm very much taken by the colour of this gemstone. As the name suggests, it has the colour of sage green and pale eucalypt. To the best of my knowledge, sage quartz is the only gemstone with this particular tone of green. It is reallllly nice! It is cut in the classic "windmill" asscher.

Comments : The classic asscher cut looks stunning in natural blue topaz. In my humble opinion, natural blue topaz easily rivals the lighter coloured aquamarine... it has a higher "refractive index" (RI), is harder and often more "blue". This stone has some very fine veil inclusions but they do not detract from the appearance of the gem.

Comments : This is an apple green Pakistani peridot cut in the classic asscher design. It is a wonderful gemstone and a good size as a ring stone. There are some very very minor inclusions that are common to peridot of this size. They are not visible face up and do not detract from the stone at all. An excellent gem!
