Amethyst

Amethyst, Trouble With Tribbles, #148

Stone : Amethyst
Cut By : Doug Menadue, 2009
Item : #148
Design : Trouble With Tribbles (J. Rowland / Robert W. Strickland)
Origin : Uruguay
Treatments : None
Weight : 3.25 carats
Clarity : Eye Clean
Size : 10.3 x 10.3 x 6.5 mm
Price : $195 AUD

Comments : A very smart little amethyst which shows the wonderful rich colours that this material from Uruguay is known for. It is eye clean and has an interesting and well placed zone that is clear of colour. Its not huge or anything, rather it's shaped like a "V" and when the gemstone is pointed downwards it looks like a mask with the zone making the eye slits. I think this zone (or rather the orientation of it) will need to be taken into account when setting it. It doesn't really show up in the pictures unfortunately. A very fine gem.

Size : 10mm X 10mm X 8.2mm

Comments : This classic Egyptian asscher cut yellow beryl is a very lovely gemstone indeed. It is the same family that aquamarine and emeralds belong to. Unfortunately I have a hard time photographing yellow... its a devilishly tricky colour to capture... that and pale pink! The pictures look a bit on the dark side and seem to be a bit more golden/brownish then they should be. In person the stone is much more light lemony yellow and brilliant and doesn't have the darker golden browns. I think it picks up these tones from the camera lens... its literally only an inch or two away from the stone and the black of the lens gets picked up in the facet reflections... well, thats my theory anyway. It really is a great stone, light and airy.

Stone : Smokey Quartz

Weight : 1.75 carats each
Clarity : Eye Clean
Size : 7 x 7 x 6 mm
Price : SOLD

Comments : These are a lovely matched pair of O'Briens Creek smokey quartz. The smokeys from here have those beautiful mocha, raw sienna colours the stones, and are full of life. The vast majority of smokey quartz in the market place has unfortunately been nuked and treated, resulting in a very dark, monotone, dull looking gem. But natural, untreated smokey quartz is a very different story. These are ideally suited as a pair of earrings and should fit a standard setting without any difficulty.

I have also shown some pics of the original crystals. You can see they are very closely matched in colour and where I have marked them to be trimmed in two. The gems were then cut out of the crystal tips.

Comments : O'Briens Creek smokey quartz is truely a beautiful stone, with lovely mocha and raw sienna hues, bright and dark tones. This smokey is natural and untreated and thus full of life. The vast majority of smokey quartz in the market place has been nuked and treated and sadly looks very dull and lifeless, with its plain monotone dark hue. This gem is nothing like that stuff, its flashy and vibrant... a fine gemstone. I believe the proud owner of this gemstone had it cut to match her puppy dog's eyes and coat.

Comments : This big smokey quartz was cut for a collector who found the smokey at Tingha in NSW. This area is renown for its quartz and many fine specimens can be found here. There is a small veil in one corner of this gem but otherwise it is a beautiful example of smokey quartz showing the lovely rich tones that only natural untreated smokey has.

Weight : 8.5 carats
Clarity : Eye Clean
Size : 12mm X 12mm X 8.5mm
Price : SOLD

Comments : A very nicely coloured and toned smokey quartz! This is not your average run-of-the-mill irradiated black/grey smokey that you see so much of in the market place... this is the real, natural thing. Smokey quartz can be a very beautiful gemstone when it is cut well and has just the right saturation. I couldn't name exactly what the colour tones were so I had a look at the colour charts for "Old Holland" painting oils and figured that the closest matches were "Raw Umber" and "Metalic Bronze". This is an especially nice smokey! It was cut from a piece that I hand dug myself in the hole that I have been working all season. I think this stone would be sensational set in gold!

A wonderful smokey like this would make a worthy addition to any collector's brag box... after all, when was the last time you saw a precision cut natural smokey in a modern design?

Comments : A richly coloured tablet of carnelian from Brazil. This would look great with a band of gold around the girdle. An interesting piece that's a little different. Another good idea for this piece is to have it carved Intaglio style as per a wax seal or signet ring. Now that would be interesting and very unique.

Design : Sunflare (Doug Menadue)
Origin : Uruguay
Treatments : Heated?
Weight : 4 carats
Clarity : Eye Clean
Size : 11 x 11 x 7 mm
Price : $240 AUD

Comments : A beautiful rich and velvety madeira citrine from Uruguay. The gem has those wonderfully deep orange colours that this Uruguayan material is famous for. It is cut in my bright and flashy Sunflare design.

You can also see its "twin" which is a richly colour Uruguayan
amethyst cut in the same design, same size. Think of them as twin brother and sister. They are matched in terms of size and colour saturation and both are fine examples of their respective types. Simply stunning stones. I would love to keep them together when I sell them as they really do complement each other. An imaginative jeweller could do amazing things with this combo.

Origin : Brazil
Treatments : Heated
Weight : 10.2 carats
Clarity : Eye Clean
Size : 15 x 15 x 6.5 mm
Price : $400 AUD

Comments : A totally unique piece. This is a very striking golden citrine cut in a design that I specifically intended for a pendant. It is a low profile so it will sit well against the chest. There is a "frosted" pentagram on the reverse side that was very tricky to photograph but it is there. A golden colour zone runs through the centre of the gem from side to side... it looks like a golden cloud. This is something a little bit different and would look absolutely fabulous set in yellow metal.

Origin : Brazil
Treatments : None
Weight : 5.1 carats
Clarity : Eye Clean
Size : 13.5mm X 10mm X 7.5mm
Price : $200 AUD

Comments : A wonderful, golden citrine cut in an oval design with good body. It has a beautiful flashiness about it and it very alive and sparkly. The colours are a lovely golden yellow, not the lemon yellow or often overly saturated whiskey colour. It is a perfect size for a ring and would really show up well. The gemstone is eye clean with no visible flaws or inclusions. There is some colour zoning but the colours mix nicely and are not overly saturated when viewing the stone from the face up. The finish on this stone is superb and the polish is mirror like. A very pleasing gem.

Citrine, Three Wise Men (Variation), #15

Item : #15
Design : Three Wise Men (Variation) (Jeff Graham)
Origin : Brazil
Treatments : Natural
Weight : carats
Clarity : Eye Clean, 5/5
Size :
Price : NOT FOR SALE

Comments : This unusually cut gemstone came about because I couldn't bring myself to grind away all that beautiful crystal I was cutting. When it came time to cut the crown there happened to be alot of nice clear stone remaining and I found myself relucant to cut it away. It was lovely clean, clear, golden citrine and the gemstone was telling me it wanted to be different to the design I was cutting. So what I did in keeping with the "5" sided nature of the design was to lengthen the girdle so that the rectangle facet was in the "phi" ratio, in this case 8mm X 5mm and thus managed to preserve the glorious crystal. This gem is one of my favourites and isn't for sale, only show. It has a significance for me in that it represented the first time that a stone really felt like it wanted to express itself and I had to make a conscious choice to let it be what it wanted to be or enforce what I wanted it to be. I'm happy to say that in the end the gemstone won.

Clarity : Eye Clean, Translucent
Size : 14mm X 11mm X 4.5mm

Comments : For a change of pace I decided to try faceting some green chalcedony that I've got. Usually this material is cut as a cabochon but I wanted to try something a little different to see how it turned out. This material was sold to me as untreated. It is a lovely green with good translucence.

* Recently on the gemology forum that I subscribe to, a fellow member stated that he also had bought a parcel of green chalcedony from Western Australia. He had sample stones tested by the GIA laboratory in Bangkok and they determined the stone to be natural and untreated chrome-bearing chalcedony. Pictures of the stone match with the material I have in colour and appearance. The chrome content makes the green quite vibrant. This, coupled with good translucence makes this stone quite special.
