Blue Topaz

Blue Topaz, Trouble With Tribbles, Pakistan, #517
Zoom

Stone : Blue Topaz
Cut By : Doug Menadue, 2013
Item : #517
Design : Trouble With Tribbles
Origin : Pakistan
Treatments : Unknown *
Weight : 10.5 carats
Clarity : Slightly Included
Size : 14.3 x 14.3 x 8.5mm
Price : 525

Comments : The colour of this gem is absolutely fantastic and would rival the best aquamarine. The design is one of my favorite trillion cuts and works very well in topaz, making a very flashy and lively gemstone. It is a good size and would look great as a pendant - note that the corners are designed to allow easy setting with claws. It does have some minor inclusions. At night time under lights the gem is outstanding! Set in yellow gold this gem would be dynamite. Overall a very fine gemstone.

* Please note, this gem was cut from a parcel of blue topaz that I purchased as coming from Pakistan. The material was sold to me as being natural but the intensity of colour of several pieces (of which this was one) suggests it might be enhanced. Either way, the gem is fabulous and the colour fantastic, better then aqua.

Comments : What a whopper! This is an incredible natural blue topaz of top colour. It has been superbly cut and polished in the SG1 design which is a Round Brilliant variation that has been optimised especially for topaz and stones with a similar refractive index. This beauty is stunning and in the sunlight it is a big ball of fireworks, dazzling the eyes with its light. This gem would be ideal for the collector or anyone who likes their gems BIG! There are several very fine silver needles but other then that its eye clean. A first class, magnificient gemstone.

Weight : 18.7 carats
Clarity : Very Very Slightly Included
Size : 14.8 x 14.8 x 11.5 mm
Price : 1590

Comments : A magnificent natural blue topaz gemstone! This is a very fine gemstone that is cut in a design which is an exceptionally challenging one to cut. I very much like this design and when I look at it I keep thinking "Art Deco" for some reason. The gem is a good solid stone with a good feel to it. There are a number of very fine silver needle inclusions that are common to topaz but the are very fine and minor and do not detract from the overall appearance of the gem at all - you really need a loupe to see them. Other then that the gem is eye clean. The internal facet patterns and reflections are fascinating and in all lighting situations, this gem is a stunner!

Comments : Exquisite! Truly exquisite! This is a gorgeous natural blue topaz from O'Briens Creek in North Queensland. This beauty is stunning and I have cut it in one of my favorite oval designs for large topaz. This design really looks great in topaz and out in the sunlight the fireworks in this gem is dazzling with big strong flashes of colour. There are several very fine silver needle inclusions which are very hard to see and do not detract from the appearance of the gem at all, you really need a loupe to see them. The gem is bright and clean with the classic light blue colour that this material is known for. This gem looks great in all lighting situations and at nighttime it really stands out. An exceptional gemstone and one that would suit the collector or any fine jewelry setting.

Comments : The history of topaz is a long and ancient one and the gem has long been used as an ornament and jewelry stone. The name "Topaz" is thought to come from the name of an island in the Red Sea formerly called Topazos but now Zebirget. Topaz was mined here on this island. Another possible origin of the name Topaz is that it comes from the Sanskrit word "tapas" which means "fire" or "heat". This could be due to the yellow/red colour that topaz sometimes occurs in.

Many people believe that topaz comes only in yellow and this is true, it does come in yellow. However fancy colors like yellow, reds, oranges and pinks are actually quite rare, so is the very beautiful natural blue. My personal thoughts on why yellow has become closely associate with topaz, in the same way that blue is associated with sapphire, is that in historical times the technology or ability to differentiate between types of stones was very limited. Yellow quartz, now known as Citrine, is quite common in many parts of the world and I believe that alot of yellow topaz was actually yellow quartz. Today we have the ability to tell the difference between the various types of stones but one still has to be cautious in the marketplace and buy from a reputable dealer as there is still the potential for confusion.

Topaz makes an ideal jewelry stone as it is hard and very durable. It cuts well into brilliant designs and becomes a gem that has lots of scintillation and "fire". If I was pushed to pick a personal favorite of all the gemstones, I would probably have to give
natural blue topaz the nod. It is a stone that I love to cut and the colour, though soft, is divine. Truly it is! The soft blue colour is for me, the most elegant of blues, soft and delicate, sometimes ethereal, sometimes icy like the blue in an arctic iceberg. It is cooling on a hot day, fresh and light and always cheery and pleasing. Each stone is unique in its coloring, some have more blue, some less. The colour is easily as beautiful as aquamarine and in truth, far better then the vast majority of aquamarine that is in the marketplace.

Sadly, with the advent of modern gemstone treatment technology, natural blue topaz has taken an undeserved fall from popularity. Irradiation and heating is now routinely used to change the clear silvery white topaz into a uniform array of vivid treated blues. These stones have the trade names of london blue, electric blue, swiss blue and sky blue. The colour is the same for each category and this is the material that you see in jewelry stores across the land. It is cheap and plentiful whereas the natural blues are scarce and relatively expensive. This sudden mass explosion of treated blues dealt the natural blues a blow and that is sad, for these natural blues are easily one of the most beautiful gems in the world of coloured gemstones. Blue sapphires might be the Queen of Gems, but if there is a Princess of Gems, she would be a natural blue topaz.
