I have finished listing a parcel of concave cut gems. Please note that these concave gems were not cut by me, I had them cut for me. I am very happy with the quality of the cut and finish, it is very high, quite good indeed. All the topaz and smokey quartz were hand dug by myself at O'Briens Creek in North Queensland. This is beautiful material, especially the smokey quartz. People don't realise just how beautiful this material can be. This smokey is natural and untreated and from a perspective of pure colour, the mocha, chocolate, coffee, tan tones are without equal. Most people I would say have only seen the irradiated material... the vast majority of commercial smokey quartz in the marketplace has been irradiated and that darkens the saturation and deadens it, in my opinion. The O'Briens Creek smokey quartz is really a beautiful stone, completely natural and literally, mine are the only hands so far that have touched it.

Over the next short while I will be introducing some very fine concave cut gems. With the exception of some amethyst and citrine, this is all material that I have personally hand dug at O'Briens Creek, North Queensland. The gems have been well cut but not by myself. The finish and polish of these gems is excellent and the cutting top quality.
It should be remembered that the vast majority of smokey quartz on the market has been irradiated to manufacture a very dark and lifeless stone. This material from O'Briens Creek is a very different beast and is completely natural and untreated. This allows the beautiful subtle mocha, coffee, chocolate and tan colours to really shine through. Take another look at smokey quartz and be very pleasantly surprised.
To begin with, here are some O'Briens Creek smokey quartz. There will be topaz, amethyst and citrine to come so stay tuned.

Hi Folks,
I hope you are all doing well out there. I'm still travelling around and at the moment I'm in the Northern Territory. I was very lucky to chance across an old bloke who has a lease and mines 'zebra rock'. This is a type of rock that is unique to this part of Australia and has very distinctive reddish-brown/creamy-white patterns. The pieces I managed to get are perfect for carving work.

Hi Folks,
I hope everyone out there is doing fantastically and keeping well.![]()
The big news that I want to share with you is that the time has finally arrived! After dreaming of it for years, I've now got two weeks left before I head off on my around Australia trip. Yes, the mighty blue kombi and I are heading off for a "quick" lap around Australia this winter (southern hemisphere). This is something that has been in the pipeworks for a long time and this year all the stars have aligned so that I am able to take four or maybe more months off to go for a big drive. Figures vary depending on routes but the distance for a trip around Australia is in the vicinity of 16000KM!!! Now, bear in mind that my kombi "Bucephalus" is a 1976 model with a top speed of 80km (and thats with a good tail wind :-) so the four months I have allowed, I think, will probably end up like six or more.
The plan at this stage, and its all subject to change at the drop of a hat, is to head off from Townsville in Queensland, out to Mt Isa, up to Katherine and Darwin in the Northern Territory, across to Broome, down the Western Australian coastline to Perth, down to Albany (which by this time will be very cold which the kombi loves), across the Great Ocean Road and the Nullarbor Plain and up to the bottom of Lake Eyre for a pilgrimage to "Planehenge" which I painted back in 2000. From there its Wilpena Pound, Adelaide, Cowell (for some black jade), over to Melbourne, Sydney and up the east coast to hopefully get back into Cairns around the end of November for the solar eclipse. That's a big drive!
Part of me thinks I'm nuts, but the other part thinks it pretty darn exciting! :-) I have no idea what to expect and to be honest my belly feels like a whole swarm of butterflies have taken up residence. There have been trepidations and little anxiety attacks but hey, if the window of opportunity presents itself, the choice at the end of the day is very simple, you either do or you don't. This is the year for me to do it, so I'm doing it. This opportunity might not ever come again.
So, this might be my last or second last update of gemstones for a little while. While I am away all my stones will still be available and for sale as I am leaving them with the gemshop and friends. Its still a couple of weeks before I head off but once I do, you can still purchase my gems as per normal. Just send me an email and it will all be taken care of, just allow a few extra days for a reply. I'm still happy to take orders but it might be a little while before I can do any cutting.
For these last two weeks I am having an Easter Sale with 10% off all my gems, so buy a gem and sponsor a Doug on his round Australia trip! :-) I plan to do some digging for stones as I go and will be posting pics and updates on this page so keep checking back to see where and what I'm up to.
I'd like to take this opportunity to thank all my customers and friends for their support, without you this would not be possible. You've helped make a dream happen.
Cheers and my thanks,
Doug...

Hi Folks,
I hope you all had a happy festive season and are ready for an exciting 2012. This update is basically all eye candy as the cut gems listed have been sold already or were custom orders, I hope you don't mind. I've also tried experimenting in my photos by adding in some rough stones in the background. I thought this might enrich the pics a little by being able to see the rough and cut stones together.
There is some very nice new rough listed that is available to be cut for custom orders including some excellent pink tourmaline from the Himalaya Mine in California. I have also added a new page containing information for the O'Briens Creek Campground.
Cheers and enjoy!

Hi Folks,
Well we're getting towards the end of the year and things are busy with plenty of stones to cut. I've been cutting plenty of orders so I haven't had much of a chance to cut many stones for the website. I have a few listed below. Take note of the beautiful black spinel, this material is actually very scarce in decent sizes and it cuts an incredibly glossy and lustrous gemstone. It is all natural and untreated and the material I have comes from Central Queensland and Tasmania. If you are looking for a pure black gemstone, black spinel is for you.
I had some friends visit me recently out here on the topaz gemfields at O'Briens Creek. We did a bit of digging and dug ourselves a mighty hole. Found a few topaz but boy, its hard work. At this time of year you head out at the crack of dawn, dig for two or three hours and then head back for breakfast. There are some pics here.
Don't forget to check out my new page where I have all my gemstones grouped by design.

I'm now relocated in my "summer pasture". Its a very choice spot with a beautiful bush setting. There is a flowing freshwater creek for my backyard and glorious peace and quiet, birdsong and wind in the trees and all the topaz in the ground for me to dig. There's a pic below of my backyard... its very dry at the moment but the wet season is not too far away and that little creek will turn into a river and everything will be very green and verdant.
